How often should you clean your gutters in metro Atlanta?

Every 3 to 4 months under heavy trees, every 6 months with moderate cover, and once a year with few trees. Here's how to find your schedule.

Twice a year is the rule of thumb you'll hear most. In metro Atlanta, where trees cover so much of the metro, plenty of homes need more. These are the factors that decide it.

What sets your schedule

  • Your trees. Pines drop needles all year. Oaks drop pollen tassels in spring and leaves in late fall. Sweetgums add seed balls. Trees that aren't directly overhead still reach your roof on the wind.
  • Storms. Georgia thunderstorms dump a lot of water fast and knock down extra debris. A partly clogged gutter that copes with light rain overflows in a downpour.
  • Your roof. Larger roofs, steep pitches and valleys collect more debris and send it into the gutters faster.
  • Guards and drains. Gutter guards stretch the time between cleanings. Buried downspout pipes make every clog more costly.

Recommended schedule

Gutter cleaning frequency
Your homeHow often
Heavy tree cover, or frequent stormsEvery 3 to 4 months
Moderate tree coverEvery 6 months
Few trees nearbyEvery 12 months

The best months in Atlanta

For homes on a twice-a-year schedule, aim for late spring, after oak pollen and tassels finish, and late fall or early winter, after the last leaves drop. Homes under heavy trees add visits in late summer and early fall.

Signs you're overdue

  • Water spilling over the gutter edge during rain
  • Plants or seedlings growing in the gutter
  • Sagging sections or gutters pulling away from the house
  • Stains on siding or peeling paint on the fascia
  • Water pooling near the foundation

What regular cleaning prevents

Clean gutters move water away from your foundation, walls and landscaping. Clogged gutters do the opposite: they rot fascia, damage soffits, erode beds, and invite mosquitoes, birds and rodents. Dry leaves packed in a gutter are also easy fuel for a stray spark.

Let the schedule run itself

With a service agreement, we put your home on the calendar every 3, 4 or 6 months for gutter cleaning and skylight cleaning. After your first visit, we'll recommend the interval that fits your trees. See what a cleaning includes.
